
Classrooms at the University of Namibia: An Infill of Academic Resilience, Windhoek, Namibia
Amidst the rapid expansion of the University of Namibia, this project demonstrates an ingenious approach to campus growth by transforming a decommissioned swimming pool into a vibrant lecture complex. By respecting the existing topography and repurposing underutilized structures, the architects have created a sophisticated learning environment that addresses both immediate spatial needs and long-term climatic comfort. This development serves as a testament to how institutional infrastructure can be both economically astute and deeply integrated into its surroundings.
The Vision
The conceptual foundation of this project was driven by the necessity to accommodate a growing student body while minimizing the environmental and financial impact of new construction. By choosing to build within the footprint of an old swimming pool, the architects utilized the existing excavation to naturally form the raked floors of the lecture theatres, effectively reducing construction costs and earthworks. The resulting space is far more than a set of rooms; it acts as a connective tissue for the campus, with the former basement pump room reimagined as a study center and the surrounding landscape activated to provide social "holding spaces" for students between academic sessions.
Tectonics
The project embraces a pragmatic material palette that echoes the industrial heritage of the region while maintaining a focus on low-maintenance durability. Red brick, steel, and metal sheeting form the primary facade, grounding the structure in a palette reminiscent of the surrounding Namibian landscape. These materials are carefully selected to endure, reducing the long-term upkeep required for such a high-traffic environment. The exterior is further defined by expanded mesh screens, which act as a filter, creating a shaded micro-climate that softens the transition between the harsh outdoor sun and the quiet, controlled interior lecture halls.
The Living Building
Climate control is managed through a passive, highly efficient envelope rather than complex mechanical systems. The design employs cavity walls and high-performance insulation to ensure both thermal and acoustic stability, essential for concentrated academic work. The architectural dialogue is one of harmony; the building does not stand apart from the veld but adopts its natural colors and textures, softening its presence. Ultimately, this infill development functions as a "living machine" for education, balancing the high-capacity needs of 350-seat lecture theatres with a human-centric approach to light, air, and social interaction.
